More about Hand Operated Water Pumps

Hand Pumps are most common in wet regions and are very resourceful during dry seasons whereby they are used to pump water for domestic consumption, from wells into water reservoirs. In urban areas they are one of the important tools used especially in rainy seasons to remove water from basements and other areas that are prone to flooding.

Pumps are not only designed to draw water, they can be used to draw any other kind of fluid from a point below the ground to another above or below the ground. The features that are common to the various models are the valves and pistons as well as a power source. Other areas where they are used are farming, landscaping and in some and sports. They are designed in various types and different models are available in the market.

Positive displacement pumps have a reciprocating piston, a plunger and non return valves on both the entry and exit pipes. The suction and lift must be considered when buying a pump. The suction is normally the vertical distance from the fluid to the Centre of the pump. Most pumps strain when it comes to pumping fluids to a depth above 7 meters. The distance between the delivery point and the center of the pump is referred to as the lift.

In swimming pools and washrooms siphon pumps are commonly used. This is because they are manufactured while retaining the principle of easy flow of fluids to lower levels. Direct action pumps have an easy installation procedure. They are also capable of drawing water as low as 15 meters deep.

Deep well pumps types are technically harder to maintain than others. Adding a flywheel to the pump makes it more efficient. They are also made using strong materials to overcome the weight of the water to be pumped. Just like hand operated water pumps the deep well pumps are not limited by the depth. You only need to have enough strength for a given height. If you want a pump that is corrosion resistant, look for a diaphragm type. It will allow only use of a certain length of the pipe and high quality diaphragm rubber. It’s also lighter than other pumps.

Most people prefer using hand pumps to pump water. They have rubber diaphragms which call for a regular inspection routine. They also need to be replaced any time they wear out. They are a good option since they use manual power.
